Embracing All the Stages of Life

Hosta, “So Sweet,” found at the Huntsville Botanical Garden

Natural Ikebana

When I first caught a glimpse of this flower, I was attracted to the way the sunlight was highlighting the main flower in an otherwise shady area. Then, as I enlarged the photo and looked more closely, I could see all the stages or phases of this plant. The flower is the main attraction, but look towards the bottom to see the dying blossoms, and then the buds just above the flower. Buds, flowers, decay, and even seeds are visible; which promise the cycle will continue. This reminded me of the art of Ikebana, which practices including all stages of the life of a plant in flower arranging.

For your contemplation

As you gaze at this scene, consider what stage of development you are in currently, how you got there, and what might be next. Whatever you discover, practice accepting the present moment. The present is all we really have; all that is real. Take a deep breath and Be Present.

You may like to focus on the buds and think of the new life they contain. Is there something in your life that is in the bud stage? How can you nurture it?

A Good Work Has Begun

We all go through many changes in this life. Personally, I made a cross-country move last year and just turned 75. That’s a lot to process, and a lot of past stages to appreciate. Would you add a piece of your journey in the comments?

Here is a verse that has comforted me multiple times over the years. I hope it blesses you too.

Philippians 1:6 says…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
